Most China-EV coverage is left-hand-drive and Europe-facing. The quietly larger opportunity is on the other side of the steering wheel - the right-hand-drive markets most importers overlook.
Right-hand traffic covers Japan, the UK, Australia and New Zealand, plus key Southeast Asian markets - Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia. That is a stacked set of mature, high-income or fast-growing markets, many long dominated by Japanese brands and now showing structural cracks as Chinese makers arrive with competitive EVs and, increasingly, RHD versions.
Until recently, the knock was availability: few Chinese EVs shipped a proper RHD variant. That has changed fast. More models now launch RHD alongside LHD, and certification paths in RHD markets are being cleared as volumes justify it. The constraint that kept importers out is becoming a checkbox.
If you operate in or near an RHD market, screen for models that actually offer the RHD version and the local certification - not a "coming soon" promise. The first movers who stock a proven RHD Chinese EV in these markets face far less crowded shelves than the LHD scrum in Europe.
RHD is the overlooked flank of the China-EV export story. The brands and importers who move there now will meet demand that the LHD-focused crowd is still ignoring - and that is exactly where the easy wins are.
